Spurs ‘make contact’ with Romelu Lukaku as Chelsea begins negotiations to acquire him

According to reports, Tottenham has reached out to Chelsea to gauge their level of interest in signing Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian international has received numerous offers to leave Chelsea for good this summer.

Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou is looking to rebuild after approving Harry Kane’s exit, therefore the club is likely to make another splash in the transfer market this summer. The £100 million transfer sees the England international move to Bayern Munich, where he will likely be replaced.

Tottenham’s newfound wealth will likely be spread across multiple areas, with the addition of a central defender being a top priority. With Richarlison being the only tried-and-true No. 9 at the club at the moment, reinforcements in the closing third are expected.

The Spurs have reportedly been in touch with the Blues about Lukaku, per Alfredo Pedulla. According to reports, Tottenham’s talks have halted negotiations between Chelsea and Juventus and laid the groundwork for future talks between the two clubs.

The Blues and the Serie A club have been in negotiations for weeks about a possible trade that would send Dusan Vlahovic to Chelsea in exchange for Romelu Lukaku and a large sum of money. It is unknown, however, whether or not the Serbian international has managed to convince Mauricio Pochettino of his worth.

The emergence of Tottenham will be a monkey wrench for Juve, who were eager on the deal. Though Chelsea may be content with only getting a transfer money for Lukaku, which they can use to acquire other players like Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia to bolster their midfield.

Earlier this summer, Spurs added forward Alejo Veliz from Rosario Central to provide depth in case of Kane’s absence. The 19-year-old is seen as an exciting young talent who will be able to develop while on the fringes of the Tottenham first team.

When asked earlier this week if he planned to spend heavily in the remaining days of the transfer window, Postecoglou said, “What we have been looking to do from day one is have a strong squad that can play the football we want and develop over a period of time.” I have to mentally include them on my squad. Can they be exactly what I’m looking for? It’s not like other clubs, and our requirements aren’t like what they’re used to.
