Chelsea close in on Djordje Petrovic deal as £12m bid launched for new goalkeeper
Djordje Petrovic, goalkeeper for the New England Revolution, is reportedly close to signing with Chelsea for £11.8 million.
After Kepa Arrizabalaga’s loan move to Real Madrid this week, Chelsea has made the 23-year-old their top goalkeeper replacement target.
Chelsea are optimistic in making a deal for the goalkeeper, who is considered to be among the finest in the MLS, despite having set a maximum budget of £20 million to do so. The terms of Petrovic’s transfer, including compensation, are still being discussed.
Chelsea will bring in Petrovic as much-needed competition for Robert Sanchez, who was given Kepa’s No. 1 shirt and will likely stay as Mauricio Pochettino’s primary goalkeeper.
It is thought that Petrovic is at the level to challenge Sanchez for the starting position should Sanchez’s play decline.
Due to the absence of injured starter Marcus Bettinelli and the impending departure of third-stringer Lucas Bergstrom on loan, the Blues are in Ԁire need of a new goalkeeper.
Already this summer, Nottingham Forest and Nantes have reportedly made offers to sign Revolution’s goalkeeper, while Manchester United has been linked to recruiting Petrovic as Andre Onana’s backup.
Despite his tender years, Petrovic has considerable experience thanks to his participation in more than 130 senior matches in Serbia and the USA.
